Soft tissue deposits from head and neck cancer: an under-recognised prognostic factor?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Prognostic factors have considerable influence in the management of cancer, and the quest for a thorough understanding of these elements remains one of the holy grails of surgeons and oncologists. In squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck, the presence or absence of cervical lymph node metastases at presentation has been identified as the single most important independent factor affecting prognosis. Overall, the presence of nodal metastasis reduces the five-year survival rate by approximately 50 per cent. Prognostic factors which have been identified include the size of the largest metastatic deposit within a lymph node, the number of lymph nodes involved and the location of those lymph nodes (that is, positive level IV and V nodes carry a worse prognosis than higher level nodes). In the past few years, extracapsular spread has increasingly been recognised as another crucial prognostic factor. Macroscopic and microscopic extracapsular spread adversely affect the outcome in oncological patients. The finding of cervical soft tissue tumour deposits, on the other hand, represents a phenomenon which may be tremendously influential prognostically. However, this is a finding which, to date, has been grossly under-reported and unrecognised in clinical studies of head and neck cancer.

INTRODUCTION Soft tissue deposits is tumorous islands apart from lymph nodes and occasionally diagnosed in neck dissection specimens. Their importance has begun to be recognized, however, their value has not been investigated in laryngeal cancer as a single tumor site. OBJECTIVE To investigate the prognostic value of soft tissue deposits in patients with laryngeal carcinoma. METHODS Medical...

Although rare, synovial sarcoma is the most common malignant non-rhabdomyosarcomatous soft tissue sarcoma in children and adolescents. Synovial sarcoma typically involves the soft tissues of the extremities, especially near large joints, but it can occur anywhere in the body in locations far from joint spaces. Although this tumor typically affects adults in their fourth decade of life, nearly h...

BACKGROUND Soft tissue deposits of squamous cell carcinoma in the necks of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract may represent either total effacement of a lymph node by carcinoma or extralymphatic deposits of carcinoma. There are few reports of their clinical or prognostic significance. METHODS Data from 215 neck dissections from 155 patients with squamous ce...

Introduction: Head and neck cancer is one of the most important cancers with low survival. This study was designed to evaluate the one-year survival of patients with head and neck cancer and related demographic factors. Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional study that reviewed the records of the patients with head and neck cancer (193 patients) in 2007-2013. In this study, Kaplan-Me...
